What are PAWSS Summer Internship grants?
PAWSS offers summer internship stipends to Five College students. These grants
cover travel and living expenses incurred while undertaking summer internships
with government agencies, research institutes, advocacy groups, and other
non-profit organizations in the fields of peace and disarmament, environmental
protection, Third World development, and human rights. Stipends range from
$300-$1000. The size and number of stipends will depend on the number of
applications received, the relevance of the internship to student's academic
endeavors, and the size of the funding pool available.
Who is eligible to receive a stipend from PAWSS?
The stipends are available to all undergraduate students from the Five Colleges,
regardless of academic concentration/major.
What types of internships do you support? Are there
any restrictions in terms of subject areas/fields?
As stated above, we encourage students to secure summer internships with government
agencies, research institutes, advocacy groups, and other non-profit organizations
in the fields of peace and disarmament, environmental protection, Third World
development, and human rights. In the past, students have undertaken internships
with a wide range of NGOs and governmental organizations in the United States
and Bangladesh, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Ecuador, Haiti, India, Israel, Japan,
Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Puerto Rico, Russia, Sri Lanka,
Switzerland, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
Internship sites have included the National Security Archives in Washington,
DC; UNICEF; the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; the UNDP;
the WHO; the US Department of State; the International Labor Organization;
the International Center for Ethnic Studies in Sri Lanka; Cultural Survival
in Cambridge, MA; Student Pugwash USA; the Consortium on Peace Research,
Education and Development; the Indian Association of Women's Studies,
New Delhi; and many more. For a helpful overview of overseas volunteer
opportunities, check out How to Live Your Dream of Volunteering Overseas by
Joseph Collins et al (Penguin, NYC: 2002).
Can PAWSS help me in identifying an internship site
in my area of interest?
PAWSS can help Five College students identify internship sites in an area of
interest, but students are responsible for applying for and arranging the internship
itself. You can request a free copy of the Guide to Careers, Internships and
Graduate Education in Peace Studies or look at our online list of potential
internship sites.
What are the selection criteria?
Preference is given to students who are on financial aid and/or would otherwise
be forced to seek regular summer employment to raise funds for their education.
The applicant must be enrolled in a degree program and must be in good academic
standing.
