Lancaster University The Institute program offers Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees, as well as research, publications, and community work. Lancaster University was the first British college to include peace research in its program. The University hosts the Centre for the Study of Arms Control and International Security. State University of Leiden Write or call for information. Lesley University Lesley University and Educators for Social Responsibility jointly sponsor
this degree program for working professionals. All courses are taught by educational
leaders with expertise in conflict resolution, peaceable school design, social
and emotional learning, and anti-bias education. University of Limerick The Irish Peace Institute (IPI) offers a one year Master's degree program in association with the University of Ulster. The Institute also sponsors post-doctoral fellows. The main areas of focus are European integration, international insitutions and cooperation, conflicts in Ireland and Europe. London School of Economics A one-year postgraduate course on Peace and Conflict Studies is applicable toward a M.S. degree or diploma in World Politics. Research work in this area for M.Phil or Ph.D. is also encouraged. The goal is to incorporate a peace research perspective within a broader emphasis of international relations in a traditional scope. Long Island University The Institute offers a certificate from the United Nations Graduate Certificate Program (UNGCP). The UNGCP offfers training in the United Nations system and its various agencies; with a particular emphasis on conflict resolution, humanitarian assistance, human rights and aid to developing countries. Through intensive courses and practical training, students acquire extensive training on the functioning of the various UN agencies. The certitificate can be incorporated into a Master's degree program in either the Social Sciences or Political Science. University of Maryland CIDCM is a University program whose purpose is to provide research and training on development, conflict resolution, and politics. The Center publishes a newsletter Nations and Needs and sponsors workshops and seminars for academics and students on development and conflict resolution. The Center does not offer any graduate degrees, but graduate students enrolled in the University of Maryland's School of Public Affairs and the Department of Government and Politics may work with faculty in defining their own program of study. University of Maryland CIDCM's primary aim is to promote a better understanding of contemporary peace and security issues among students, researchers, teachers and policy-makers. The Center puts out several punblications dealing with arms control, regional and international security, foreign policy, economic security, terrorism and defense strategy. The Center also sponsors regular lectures, seminars, and workshops on range of topics. Graduate students enrolled at Department of Government and Politics and other departments and at the School of Public Affairs may draw on the resources offered by the center in designing their program of study. CIDCM is home to Women In International Security (WIIS), a project devoted to enhancing the career prospects of women in the international security field through through seminars and postdoctoral fellowships. University of Maryland The Government and Politics Department offers a unique combination of faculty resources for students interested in graduate study of the politics of the global environment. The Department also offers advanced seminars from various disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives, and it houses the Harrison Program on the Future Global Agenda which supports a range of teaching and research activities related to environmental themes in addition to supporting two doctoral students every year and sponsoring regular workshops and conferences. University of Massachusetts, Boston Umass/Boston offers a Graduate Certificate Program in Dispute Resolution sponsored by the Law Center of the College of Public and Community Service. The program is intended for people whose employment requires that they cope with conflict, and who feel that training as a negotiator, mediator or designer of conflict resolution mechanisms would be useful. Students completing the program can subsequently apply credits earned to a master's degree in Human Services or Sociology, upon admission to either of these UMass/Boston master's degree programs. Massachusetts Institute of Technology The Security Studies Program at MIT (DACS) is a graduate level research and educational program based at the Center for International Studies at MIT. The Program's teaching ties are primarily, though not exclusively, with MIT's Political Science Department, and courses offered emphasize grand strategy, technology, arms control, and bureaucratic politics issues. The SSP/DACS faculty includes natural scientist and engineers as well as social scientists. A special feature of the program is the integration of technical and political analyses in studies of international security problems. Faculty members advise or comment frequently on current policy problems, but the program's prime task is educating those who will be the next generation of scholars and practitioners in international security policy making. The Program's research and public service activities necessarily complement that effort. SSP/DACS supports the research work of graduate students, faculty and fellows, and sponsors seminars and conferences to bring the results of this work to the attention of academic and policy audiences. University of Melbourne The International Conflict Resolution Centre offers graduate students in other University departments an opportunity to design a concentration in Conflict Resolution. Areas of specialization include Asia-Pacific region, resurce conflicts, internation organizations and dispute resolution training. University of Michigan The Ph.D. in World Politics offers concentrations in International Security, Global System, and Foreign Policy with an emphasis on a scientific and quantitative approach. In addition, the Program is home of the Correlates of War Research Project. University of Michigan The Program for International Peace and Security Research is an interdisciplinary research and graduate training center whose objective is to foster critical analysis of existing theories and methods in the study of international relations and to promote innovative research and policy analysis. While the Program does not offer degrees, individuals applying to doctoral programs in any of the University's social science departments are eligible to apply for MacArthur graduate fellowships. University of Missouri-Columbia University of Missouri, St. Louis The M.A. in dispute resolution is designed to give students a thorough understanding of social conflict, its role in society, and strategies for constructive resolution through conflict analysis, negotiation, mediation, and other cooperative processes. Course work in social conflict, change, movements, and sociological methods is combined with the learning of intervention ethics, roles, and strategies. Monterey Institute of International Studies The Center offers the opportunity for master's level work in weapons nonproliferation. Studies include political and policy issues and graduates combine their academic work with hands-on work in relavant organizations. Students work in the center toward a master's degree in international policy, international public administration, or international environmental policy. The center also offers post-doctoral research fellowships. Jawaharlal Nehru University The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) through its various departments and research centers offers both a Master's and Ph.D. with concentrations in International Relations, Peace and Security Studies, Arms Control and Disarmament, etc. The Centre for International Politics, Organization, and Disarmament (CIPOD) is a University program based at the School for International Studies, devoted to teaching and research in regional and international affairs; and offers excellent library resources for Graduate students. New York City Consortium Betty Lall and Lyn Fine are coordinating a committee of professors from more than a dozen colleges and universities in the New York City area interested in developing a multi-institution, interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution. The committee hopes to develop a program which would draw on the various strengths of the participating institutions in the social and behavioral sciences, international relations, public policy, teacher training, and urban studies. University of Notre Dame As a center for multidisciplinary teaching and research on peace, justice, and violence within contemporary society, the IIPS offers an M.A. in Peace Studies with four concentrations designed for different vocational paths: "international peace and world order" for students seeking to become international civil servants, national security experts, or diplomats; "cultural, philosophical, and religious dimensions of peace and justice" for those interested in church-related administration and education; "conflict resolution and dispute settlement" for civil rights activists and labor relations specialists; and "social change for peace" for potential leaders in international voluntary organizations, political activists, and lobbyists. Students within the Ph.D. program of the University's Department of Government and International Studies can work with Institute fellows and focus on issues of peace and world order, and may receive Peace Studies hyphenated Ph.D.'s. Nova Southeastern University The Department offers a graduate certificate, an M.S. and two Ph.D. in Dispute Resolution programs (residential and distance education formats), providing students the opportunity for academic instruction, training, research and consultation in various aspects of alternative dispute resolution. University for Peace Chartered by the U.N. in 1984, but now completely autonomous, the University offers a humanistic program of studies on education for peace, economic development, conflict resolution, and scientific cooperation. A new joint M.A. with the University of Quebec in Montreal will focus on the history of peace and peace movements, the importance of technology, and the ties among personal, civil, and collective peace. A second joint M.A. program has also been established with Syracuse University. University of Pennsylvania The interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Conflict Analysis and Peace Science focuses on the phenomenon of human conflict and provides the opportunity for students to approach its analysis from a wide range of perspectives. The program draws on faculty from the fields of regional studies, public policy analysis, international relations, economics, linguistics, statistics, and the social sciences. Subjects include social choice and collective decisions, linguistic foundations of conflict behavior, bargaining and negotiating, national security, and peace science as a means of policy analysis. Pepperdine University The program includes courses in the processes of dispute resolution and the application of these processes to the areas of domestic relations, environment, international commerce, public interest issues, and education. The emphasis of the Institute is on the collaborative skills of counseling, negotiation, and mediation. University of Pittsburgh The center is a focal point of research and education on national and international security issues at the University. It's mission is to build a substantive program in research, academic enrichment, and community outreach given the post-Cold War security agenda.
