Summer Faculty Institute 2002The Institute is intended to provide college and university faculty from all over the United States with an intensive exposure to current research and analysis on a significant theme or problem in international security. The 2002 Institute, held at Amherst College from June 11 to June 14, was attended by approximately 35 faculty members from the Five College community and from other colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. The topic of the 2002 Institute was: "American Hegemony in International Perspective." The aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks has placed a spotlight on the U.S. role as both a hegemonic target and a hegemonic power. Since the bombing of the World Trade Center, the Bush administration has pursued an often unilateral campaign to wage a "war on terrorism." While states and peoples around the world have expressed sympathy for the United States because of Sept. 11, many people have also criticized aspects of the U.S. response, along with other expressions of what is viewed as American arrogance. The 2002 Summer Institute sought to deepen our understanding of the international implications of U.S. hegemony in the 21st century. To better understand this critical topic, we considered hegemony, imperialism and globalization in historical perspective. Is the unilateral approach of the Bush administration dangerous, as some contend? Or is it a necessary and legitimate exercise of global policing? To what extent will other countries and actors submit to or contest this exercise of hegemonic power? What kind of changes -- economic, regional, religious, political, cultural -- can we expect? What are the most promising alternatives? View the conference schedule. Home | About Us | Contact Us | Help |
