View the Conference Schedule.

This year's Institute will focus on "Resource Conflict, Globalization, and International Security." Our intent is to consider how intensified resource competition will combine with economic globalization and political rivalry to affect the prospects for war and peace in contested resource zones around the world. Among the topics we will consider are the historical role of resource competition in world affairs, the political economy of resource extraction, and the geography of global resource distribution. We will also examine the role of resource exploitation in the financing of civil wars, such as those now under way in Angola, Congo, and Sierra Leone.

A wide range of distinguished scholars and analysts will be invited to address these topics. Confirmed speakers include: JR McNeil, Peter Haas, Michael Klare, Erik Kreil, Martha Olcott, Gary Sick, Paul Collier, Will Reno, Lansana Gberie, Nancy Peluso, and Sandra Postel.

The objective of the Summer Faculty Institute is to provide a selected group of college and university faculty--predominately teachers in the field of international relations, peace and conflict studies, political science and sociology--with an opportunity to explore current problems in the field without the distractions of teaching and daily obligations. We also plan to use these events to develop new syllabi and curriculum materials in the peace and security field. PAWSS, the main sponsor of this event, is a multi-disciplinary educational endeavor of the Five College consortium, incorporating Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
