Faculty GrantsThe Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies (PAWSS) is pleased
to offer grants of up to $1,500 to Five College faculty to develop new courses or to update
course segments on peace and world security issues, broadly defined.
These grants are intended to strengthen Five College course offerings by providing resources
to faculty designing a new course (or to revise an existing one). Funds may be used to support
course-related travel, to use vacation time to develop a new course, or to purchase films, videos
or other materials for classroom use. All Five College faculty from any discipline are eligible to
apply. The application deadline is February 10, 2003. Grants will be awarded for the academic year
beginning in September 2003.
The aim of the PAWSS faculty grants is to expand course offerings at the Five Colleges that
address issues in contemporary peace and world security. In particular, we hope to inspire
faculty to develop new courses in areas that are not well covered by existing offerings in
fields such as anthropology, sociology, psychology, the humanities, and the natural sciences. Areas of particular interest for developing new courses include: APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Faculty wishing to apply for a grant should write a letter to the PAWSS Curriculum Grants Sub-Committee (c/o Prof. Michael Klare, PAWSS, Hampshire College) describing the course or course segment you propose to develop and the way in which the funds requested will be used. The letter should also indicate how this course addresses a gap in current offerings in the Five colleges, as well as evidence that the proposed course will in fact be offered in the year(s) ahead. Any other information (syllabi, vitae, etc.) that would assist the Sub-Committee in making a decision should also be provided. Applications are due by February 10, 2003. The grant recipients will be chosen by a Sub-Committee of the PAWSS Steering Committee made up of: Frank Holmquist (Hampshire), Michael Klare (PAWSS) Kavita Khory (Mount Holyoke) and Laura Reed (PAWSS). Recipients will be informed by the end of February. For further information, contact Michael Klare at Hampshire College (Telephone: 413-559-5563/Fax: 413-559-5611).
