Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For additional information: Alcinda Honwana To Speak On:"Young Women and War in Mozambique"At Amherst CollegeOn Wednesday, March 28, the Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies will sponsor a lecture by Alcinda Honwana entitled "Young Women and War in Mozambique." The lecture will be held in the Cole Assembly Room, Converse Hall, Amherst College at 7:30 PM. The lecture is part of the PAWSS spring lecture series focusing on "Violence Against Women In War And Peace." Alcinda Honwana is a program officer at the United Nations in the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict. Born in Mozambique, Dr. Honwana received her Ph.D. in social anthropology from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, and has lectured at the University Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo, Mozambique and at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. She has conducted extensive research on political conflict and the politics of culture, the impact of armed conflict on children, and post-conflict healing, reconciliation and social integration of war-affected children. She has published numerous scholarly articles and book chapters on these issues. This event is free, open to the public, and wheelchair accessible. The lecture series is co-sponsored by the Five College Women's Studies Research Center and the Everywoman's Center at the University of Massachusetts.
