The Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies (PAWSS) was established in 1982 by faculty from the Five College consortium (Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst) to enhance undergraduate education in the field of peace and international security studies. The program began with a faculty seminar on the nuclear arms race and has since grown into a major educational effort entailing faculty workshops and institutes, undergraduate course offerings at the Five Colleges, public lectures and conferences, a student leadership program, publications, and professional development in the field.

PAWSS's overarching goal is to enhance the contribution of the academic community to the search for global peace, justice, and security. In pursuing this goal, PAWSS has several specific objectives: (1) to increase and improve the curricular offerings in the peace and security field at the Five Colleges; (2) to enhance faculty, student, and public awareness of vital international developments; (3) to encourage college students to pursue lifetime careers and graduate education in peace and world security; (4) to promote regional, national, and international communication among educators in the field; and (5) to advance the state of the field generally.

Initially, these activities were focused primarily on issues arising from the nuclear arms race and U.S.-Soviet relations; in recent years, however, the program's focus has been expanded to include other significant threats to peace and stability, including ethnic and religious strife, social and political violence, environmentally-related conflict, human rights abuses, and persistent Third World underdevelopment. In exploring these issues, PAWSS seeks to present diverse points of view and to draw upon a broad spectrum of academic and professional disciplines.

From its inception, PAWSS has endeavored to relate its projects and activities to the changing international environment. As we approach the onset of the 21st century, it is evident that the world faces a complex array of both new and old dangers. To ensure that our faculty and students will be able to participate in the search for constructive solutions to these problems, PAWSS will continually redesign its programs and activities in light of emerging international trends.
